How Autogas Can Help Fleets Control Fuel Spending

For fleets, fuel is one of the largest ongoing operating expenses. When fuel prices rise, every mile driven can put more pressure on the bottom line.

Using Alliance AutoGas autogas pricing data alongside monthly retail fuel prices from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the difference is clear: autogas was priced below gasoline and diesel every month from January through August in all seven regions.

A Look at 2026 Fuel Prices

The following tables compare the average monthly price per gallon for autogas, regular gasoline and No. 2 diesel.

PADD 1A: New England

Over the eight-month period, autogas averaged about $1.88 per gallon, compared with $3.70 for gasoline and $5.21 for diesel. EIA monthly retail data support the gasoline and diesel figures above.

PADD 1B: Central Atlantic

Autogas averaged about $1.90 per gallon during the period, compared with $3.78 for gasoline and $5.16 for diesel.

PADD 1C: Lower Atlantic

Autogas averaged about $1.88 per gallon in the Lower Atlantic, while gasoline averaged $3.51 and diesel averaged $4.71.

PADD 2: Midwest

Autogas averaged about $1.93 per gallon in the Midwest, compared with $3.55 for gasoline and $4.76 for diesel.

PADD 3: Gulf Coast

Autogas averaged about $1.79 per gallon in the Gulf Coast, compared with $3.31 for gasoline and $4.52 for diesel.

PADD 4: Rocky Mountain

Autogas averaged about $1.90 per gallon in the Rocky Mountain, compared with $3.65 for gasoline and $4.69 for diesel.

PADD 5: West Coast

The West Coast saw some of the largest differences. Autogas averaged about $1.89 per gallon during the period, compared with $4.85 for gasoline and $5.70 for diesel.

What the Numbers Mean for Fleets

Across all seven PADD regions, the average price of autogas remained well below both gasoline and diesel from January through August 2026.

For a fleet that uses thousands or even hundreds of thousands of gallons of fuel each year, a difference of even $1 per gallon can have a significant effect on annual fuel spending.

For example, a fleet purchasing 100,000 gallons of fuel would spend approximately $100,000 less for every $1 per gallon difference in fuel price, assuming the same volume of fuel is consumed. Actual fleet savings will depend on vehicle fuel economy, miles driven, fuel consumption and local fuel pricing.

More Than the Price at the Pump

Fuel price is only one part of the equation when evaluating a fleet fuel. Fleets also have to consider vehicle compatibility, fueling infrastructure, maintenance, fuel availability and the specific operating requirements of their vehicles.
